Rekey or replace?
Rekeying swaps the small pins inside the cylinder. A new key works. The old ones don't. When the locks themselves are in decent shape, that is usually the cheaper route.
Replacement makes more sense when a lock is worn, damaged or light duty, or when you want something different such as a keypad deadbolt. Moving soon? Read why to rekey when you move.
Condos, apartments and rentals
In a rental the landlord usually owns the hardware. Check the lease first. A locksmith can rekey between tenants, set up one owner key that opens every unit, and change locks after a lawful eviction.
Keys cut at your door
Standard house keys can usually be cut on site, and one key can often be set up for the front door, back door and garage entry. Restricted or high-security keys may have to be ordered.
Doors and Northwest weather
Months of Clark County rain swell wooden doors and frames, and a deadbolt that slid easily in August can bind by November. If you have to lift or shove the door to lock it, the strike plate or the door itself needs adjusting. Ask about it when you call; it is often a small repair rather than a new lock.
